• What we’ll do
Join us at the Tampa Theater to screen the film Dune. If we get enough people, we’ll see about getting a group rate. Either way, it should be a lot of fun watching this classic.
2h 17m / PG-13 / Sci-Fi Thriller
Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan) is the culmination of generations of biological planning and political maneuvering – fated to be the Kwisatz Haderach, a superbeing who will unite the universe, his own nature is a mystery to him. But no plans survive contact with the enemy; the vile Baron Harkonnen, his own mother Jessica and the Fremen people of the planet Dune (unique source of the most valuable substance in creation) all have roles to play in this trippy and psychedelic science fiction masterpiece from director David Lynch.
Dune is, let’s say, an idiosyncratic adaptation of its beloved and viciously guarded source material; it definitely gets some things right and some things very wrong (looking at you, Sting). But besides presenting just a visually arresting version of a fictional, far-flung universe, it also sets up another thought experiment: what David Lynch might have ended up being. Now regarded as a masterful auteur of the secret darkness that lurks in the hearts of “normal” people, he almost ended up a genre movie director. Eraserhead to The Elephant Man to this movie – there’s a shadow version of David Lynch in the universe next door where he’s directing Avengers movies, and this is a porthole into that terrifying place.
