This workshop project will focus on modifying a Hydro-Stacker vertical hydroponics system. This system was purchased at Urban Oasis here in Tampa for $500, 4 years ago, and my biggest complaint has been that the water only moves in one direction….from the reservoir out to the plants and then pours out on the ground. Also, the recommended soil replacement is coconut fiber, but it is messy and needs to be replaced over time. Finally, there is no water level sensor, or water cycle controllers, so we need to add a brain to this system. This project will make several modification to the system so that it is suitable to be run on an apartment balcony and will need the following upgrades:
– Create 18 Bell siphons
– Alter Hydro-Stackers to be flood-n-drain
– Switch soil replacement to grow stones
– Create funnel and plumbing for water returns
– Add water level sensor, pH sensor, power relay, and Raspi
– Connect Raspi to TinkerMode and Initial State (IoT)
– Identify natural fertilizers for hydroponics
– Create a fertilizer testing and dosing schedule
Green Tech Workshop overview – The Green Tech Workshop is a meetup at the Tampa Hackerspace to discuss your interests and goals for Green Tech and collaborate on projects. Green Tech is a significant topic, and we want to invite experts for key subjects, to help us all explore what is possible. Workshop Projects will be constructed at the Tampa Hackerspace for the following subjects:
– Garden Robots
– Algae, PhotoBioReactors
– Rainbarrel irrigation
– Mushrooms, Mycology, Terrariums
– Sprouts, Germination Towers
– Worms, Vermiculture, Compost Towers
– Hydroponics (Plants with no soil, Chemical fertilized water)
– Aeroponics (Plants with no soil, Chemical fertilized water-vapor)
– Aquaponics (Plants with no soil, fish, fish waste fertilized water)
All Workshop Project documentation and design files will be available on the Tampa Hackerspace GitHub account. https://github.com/TampaHackerspace
There is no charge for this workshop.
